Devotional: Step out in Faith

Situations wil arise when you would have to leave your comfort zone and get out of the boat. There will be moments when you will have to take a bold step and walk on water believing that Jesus will be there with you.

When these moments arise, it is easy for the spirit of fear to overwhelm you and make you look at the waves rising all around. The reality of the situation would dawn on you rapidly and cause you to begin to doubt and sink.

However, be encouraged. Trust God. Have faith that whether you walk or sink, Jesus is always with you.

If Peter had allowed his fears to overwhelm him initially, he would not have had the experience of being the only man besides Jesus to have walked on water in the Bible, even if it was only for a brief moment. Peter acted in obedience to Christ through faith. Love is the reason we obey God. Faith is the driving force of obedience.

Make a decision today. You can choose to be average and follow the status quo, or, like Peter, you can be obedient to the call of God on your life and step out of that boat.

25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear.27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”

28  And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”29 He said,“Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.”31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
